Golf courses in Western Cape & Garden Route

For the golf lover traveling to the Cape there are a variety of superb golf courses, namely to choose from whether you are self-driving or chartering a light aircraft to get there.

Pezula Golf Course | Simola Golf Estate | George Golf Club | Goose Valley Golf Club | Pearl Valley | Map

The Pezula Golf Course

Sparrebosch Clifftop Estate in Knysna is home to the spectacular Pezula Golf Course.  Pezula possesses one of the best locations on the African continent as it is surrounded by rugged cliffs, ancient forests and sheltered beaches. This championship golf course is situated on the East head of Knysna, overlooking the Indian Ocean , Knysna lagoon and the Outeniqua Mountain range. It is also in the heart of the famous Garden Route and only a 40-minute flight from Cape Town.

The course's designers, Ron Fream and David Dale (Golfplan USA) have compared the look of Pezula golf course to that of Gleneagles in the Scottish Highlands and Pebble beach on the Monterey coastline. A terrain of rolling fairways, fynbos and eyebrow bunkers does, however, make it very difficult to walk this course therefore golf carts are provided for all golfers.

The five different tee options on every hole cater for all skill levels. No two challenges, or views, are alike. The signature holes are the three holes built on the cliff top overlooking the ocean; the par-five 13th, par-four 14th and the par-three 15th. The par-four 14th is particularly challenging as it is built right on the breach of the cliffs.  It is short and requires you to lay-up before firing at the pin. The green is completely surrounded by bunkers. Pezula has been chosen to host the ladies world championships in 2005, 2006 and 2007.Course type: Parklands/Links Combination

Simola Golf and Country Estate

Simola is a Jack Nicklaus Signature Course - the first Nicklaus Signature Course in Africa. He has been named 'Golf Course Architect of the Year' for 1992 by Golf World and as the leading golf course designer in United States in 2000 (this last in a scientific study undertaken by the Golf Research Group and based on verifiable research into the designer's impact and value of the success of every golf course development built in the USA between 1990 and 2000).

Jack Nicklaus aka The Golden Bear's 18-hole championship course at Simola, Knysna has been created to challenge the professional and inspire the amateur.

The George Golf Club

The George Golf course, is a beautifully manicured, 72 par, 18 hole course, with bent greens, set in the heart of the garden route. A must for visitors to the area this course has a mature parkland layout with many trees and thick undergrowth.

The back nine consists of three par-fours, three par-threes and three par-fives. The long par-three 17th hole, played from an elevated tee requires a well-struck long iron or fairway wood to a narrow green.

The course rating for men is either 70 (club - 5774m) or 72 (championship - 6100m), while that for the ladies is 72 (5188m).

Goose Valley

The Goose Valley Golf Course is situated in pristine surroundings, only 2km from Plettenberg Bay and bordering on the Keurbooms Lagoon.

This Gary Player designed golf course boasts magnificent views of the lagoon, the ocean and the Tsitsikamma Mountains. The golfing experience is enhanced by the beauty of the natural fynbos and the abundance of animal and birdlife around the course.

Pearl Valley

This stunning course is situated in the Winelands, between Paarl and Franschhoek. It boasts a range of attractive features, with artfully created water hazards and bunkers which frame the course. The wide fairways make this a very playable course for all levels of golfers.

Designed by Jack Nicklaus, in its engineering and planning detail, the course is very rare. It is crossed by roads in only three places, and the drainage system allows play to continue just minutes after a severe cloudburst.
